Whale Watching Oahu Report: The Hydrophone Is Alive Off Haleiwa
Sound on — that was the theme as seen on our Instagram this week. Our Oct 30 reel, "Science Meets Magic: Our Hydrophone," paired a marlin coming boatside and swimming off strong with something you cannot see in a photo: real humpback song from our hydrophone recordings, the same singing guests hear live on board. That is what whale season on Oahu's North Shore sounds like right now, and October is only the beginning.
What the hydrophone hears off Haleiwa
Humpback whales return to Hawaiian waters every fall, and whale watching season here runs October through March. You do not just watch for them from the rail — on our trips we drop the hydrophone and listen. Male humpbacks sing long, haunting songs under the surface, and hearing that sound live, from a private boat out of Haleiwa Harbor, is the moment guests talk about long after the trip ends. Recent posts have carried those real hydrophone recordings — never music over whale content, always the whales themselves.
This week's posts also showed the other side of a North Shore morning: a marlin right up at the rail on Oct 29 — the most-watched post on our Facebook Page this week — rods bent on Oct 28, and a fresh catch coming up hand-over-hand on Oct 30. Whale season and fishing season share the same water here, and a private trip can hold a little of both.
Watch and listen before you book

A note on wildlife, honestly
On our trips you can see whales, sharks, and turtles if they choose to show themselves — and occasionally a rare endangered Hawaiian monk seal. We never guarantee a sighting and we never chase wildlife. What we do guarantee is a private boat, just your crew, six guests max, with Captain Matt running every trip himself out of Haleiwa Harbor at 66-105 Haleiwa Rd.
