Deep Sea Fishing Oahu: Aku on the Troll Off Haleiwa

Lines in at sunrise, aku on the deck before lunch. That is how the week looked as seen on our Instagram this week — our Oct 26 reel showed guests hooked into blue-and-white aku (skipjack tuna) on a private morning out of Haleiwa, and the same reel was the most-watched post on our Facebook Page this week. If you have been wondering what deep sea fishing off Oahu's North Shore looks like right now, that is it: early lines, a trolling spread behind the boat, and fast fish keeping every rod honest.

What is biting off Haleiwa

Recent trips have seen aku leading the action on the troll. Aku are the bread-and-butter tuna of these waters — blue and white, one to two feet long, and built to fight well above their size. When a school rises behind the boat, the spread lights up and everyone on board gets a turn on the rod. Captain Matt reads the water the local way: bird activity, current lines, and the signs that say the fish are feeding right here, right now.

The same North Shore grounds can always surprise you. Mahi mahi and ono (wahoo) move through on the troll, and shibi — yellowfin tuna under 100 lbs — are always possible on a pelagic morning. We keep our reports honest: no trip is a guarantee, every trip is private, and the ocean decides the day. On the water you can also see whales, sharks, and turtles if they choose to show themselves — and occasionally a rare endangered Hawaiian monk seal.
