Haleiwa Fishing Report: Mahi and Aku Heading Into November

Following up on last week's fishing, the North Shore pattern is holding as we head into November — and this is a great time to get a date on the calendar.

Off Haleiwa, trade winds come and go and the ocean settles between swells. Early morning has been the cleanest window. That is when a private trip out of Haleiwa Harbor really shines: one group, Captain Matt, no crowds, and lines in the water while the day is still fresh.

What has been in the mix: mahi mahi and aku — skipjack tuna — on the troll, with wahoo (ono) and shibi (yellowfin under 100 lbs) showing in the same waters, plus trevally and bottom fish when we switch up the plan. Quick fish ID from Captain Matt: if it is blue and white and 1 to 2 feet long, that is aku. Ahi is only for yellowfin over 100 lbs — we do not call smaller fish ahi.

November also brings us deeper into whale season. Whale watching runs October through March, and on our trips you can see whales, sharks, and turtles if they choose to show themselves — and occasionally a rare endangered Hawaiian monk seal.

This post pairs with our latest FishingBooker fishing report, "Haleiwa Fishing Report — Week of Oct 26" (October 30, 2026): https://fishingbooker.com/reports/view/132513
