Haleiwa Fishing Report: The Aku Bite Is On Off the North Shore

Aloha from Haleiwa! The aku bite is on off the North Shore, and recent private charters aboard Hawaii Whale Tale Tours have been bending rods on aku (skipjack tuna) on the troll.

Aku are fast, hard-hitting skipjack tuna, and when a school comes up behind the boat the action gets busy in a hurry — lines out, aku crashing the lures, and everyone on board taking a turn on the rod. On a recent trip, one of our guests hooked his very first aku, and the smile — and the shaka — in the photo from that trip says it all. First fish or fiftieth, an aku is hard to beat.

The troll has been the ticket. We cover water off Haleiwa, watching for bird piles and current lines, and put the spread right where the aku are feeding. And fall on the North Shore can always surprise you — mahi mahi, ono (wahoo) and ahi (yellowfin tuna) all move through these same waters on our pelagic charters, and you never know what will climb on next.

And there is a bonus this time of year: whale season is back on the North Shore. As the humpbacks return to Hawaiian waters, we drop the hydrophone and listen to their songs live on board — it is one thing to see a whale, and something else entirely to hear them singing under the boat. Our whale watching tours run seasonally from October to March.

Our private charters leave from Haleiwa Boat Harbor and start at $650 for a 2-hour custom charter for up to 2 people. Other private options include Live Bait Bottom Fishing (4 hours, $900), the V.I.P. Pelagic Fishing Charter (5 hours, $1,150), a Full Day Pelagic Fishing Charter (7 hours, $1,550) and a Night Fishing Charter ($750). Every trip is private — just your group, the captain and the ocean.
